Cultural heritage discovery tour

This excursion offers an introduction to key aspects of German colonization in the Lake Llanquihue basin, explored through its history, architecture, and lakeside landscapes—while also acknowledging the cultural syncretism with the earlier Chilote-Huilliche traditions.

Excursion Description: Before leaving Puerto Varas, we begin with a short walk through the Heritage District to appreciate its architecture, shaped by both German and Chilote influences and still visible in the city’s character today.

We then head to Mount Calvario, where we provide an overview of the origins of Puerto Varas while enjoying a beautiful panoramic view of the city. From here, you can admire the Church of the Sacred Heart, the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes, and the distant Tronador Mountain

From Puerto Varas we go directly to Frutillar to visit the most emblematic sites such as the German Museum, the Clock, the iconic Teatro del Lago, the dock of the Bandurria boat, observing along the waterfront beautiful houses made by the second and third generations of the first settlers

In Frutillar Bajo there is an interesting local gastronomic offer that we will know and enjoy according to the preferences of the passengers

After lunch we continue along the shore of the lake to Los Bajos, to head to our third destination: Puerto Octay

Puerto Octay is a town frozen in time. Walking through its streets feels like stepping back a century, while admiring its heritage buildings. We will also visit an interesting wetland located near the main square.

On our return to Puerto Varas, we will pass through farmland and see the homes of settlers who arrived in the basin starting in 1852, when these lands were swampy rainforest and there were no roads.

The route we now travel by land had to be crossed by settlers by boat. The need for lake transportation led to the development of navigation, which reached its peak in the early decades of the last century. Along the way, we will also be able to see remnants of some of the 45 piers that once surrounded the lake, allowing farmers to transport their goods and thereby fostering commercial ties among local communities.
